How the Egyptian Exchange works
The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) is one of the oldest stock markets in the Middle East: exchanges opened in Alexandria in 1883 and in Cairo in 1903. Today it lists more than 200 companies on its main market, from banks and property developers to fertiliser makers, food producers and technology firms.
Trading runs from Sunday to Thursday, with the main session between 10:00 and 14:30 Cairo time. Shares are priced in Egyptian pounds (EGP), and the market is supervised by the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA).
The indices to know
The EGX30 is the benchmark. It tracks the 30 largest and most actively traded companies, weighted by the value of shares freely available to trade, so heavyweights such as Commercial International Bank move it most. The equal-weighted EGX70 EWI and EGX100 EWI give a better read on mid-sized and smaller companies. Compare the indices.
What moves Egyptian stocks
The pound is the single biggest factor. When the currency weakens, investors often buy shares of exporters and companies with foreign-currency revenue, and property developers, as a hedge against inflation. Interest-rate decisions by the Central Bank of Egypt, IMF programme reviews, Gulf investment deals and the flow of foreign portfolio money into Egyptian treasury bills all feed through to the stock market.
