Cap-weighted vs equal-weighted

In the EGX30, a company's weight depends on the market value of its freely traded shares, so a handful of large companies can drive the index. The EWI (equal-weight index) versions give every company the same weight, which makes them a better gauge of how the typical Egyptian stock is doing. When the EGX30 rises but the EGX70 EWI falls, gains are concentrated in the largest names.
